Wildwood by Drusilla Campbell

Just finished my latest novel. It was very good. A somewhat slow start but Drusilla Campbell does a great job at characterization and all of the women in the novel - though flawed tremendously - are still likable and believable. A great testament to lasting friendship.

Wildwood is about the difficulties of friendships. It features three friends - Liz, Hannah and Jeanne - who grew up together and remain the strongest of friends. It's a friendship that has lasted through the years (the present time has the three at about 50) even though distance in miles and personalities have separated them. The threads that hold their friendship together are often thin due to a horrifying secret that each has held onto since they were 12. The novel revolves around this secret and leaves each of them hurting in their own separate way. This hurting causes them to sometimes hurt each other (and those around them) but in the end, it is their ability to share that experience together, (finally) that strengthens them as a whole. If you've ever experienced a deep friendship like the one described in this book you can certainly relate to how a real friendship can stand the tests of personalities and the wounds created by life. Campbell does a great job in writing about the hurt we all do to each other and the forgiveness that hopefully comes with it. Certainly recommended.
