The Tenderness of Wolves by Step Penny

I am now on to my next novel. This one is a 2006 Costa Book of the Year Winner. People magazine (interestingly, I buy a lot of my books from their recommendations) said about this book: "Think Cold Mountain - only colder...Mystery, romance and really bad weather." Now, I never read Cold Mountain but I saw the movie and I can handle that comparison. Anyway, this one takes place in 1867 in the an isolated Canadian settlement in the Northern Territory. A man is brutally murdered and when a local woman stumbles upon the crime scene, launching an investigation, she will regret her actions when her seventeen-year-old son turns out to be the prime suspect. His disappearance the day of the murder points only to his guilt and the search that ensues will take the reader on quite a ride. It sounds like quite the saga and I'm hoping to enjoy this one. I'll let you know.

Update:  So I finished The Tenderness of Wolves. I really enjoyed it. Most likely because I love historical fiction and mysteries (not to mention that the writing was really good and the story was fascination - see previous post). It was a quick read with a lot of small stories within the main story - enough to keep the wandering mind occupied (plus the chapters were really short). It was really interesting to see the number of newcomers to this continent in the time period of the book (1876). Interesting to read about the mixing of different cultures from Norwegian to Scots to Native American to French. As well, there was some interesting information on the Hudson Bay Company which I would love to research to see if there is truth in it. Anyway, I certainly recommend.
