So I've finished my most recent read. This one is about Truly, a girl/woman, living in upstate New York who has the unwelcome distinction of not only "killing" her mother during birth but doing so because of her massive size. From her birth, Truly's life gets no easier and her size only increases. Her sister is china-doll beautiful and loved by all. Her father is a bitter drunk who lets his house, girls and life fall into disrepair until he finally succumbs to the beer he drinks for breakfast, lunch and dinner when Truly is 12. In turn, his girls are separated to live with two different families. Truly goes to live with the Dyersons, a poor, barely-making it farm family. Serena Jane (Truly's sister) ends up with the preacher and his wife. Each of their lives turns out as you might expect until Serena Jane runs off leaving Truly to look after her sister's husband and son.
So much happens in this novel that I could go on and on about the different twists and turns for 10,000 words. There's witchcraft, murder, unrequited love, revenge, and secrets that change lives. I went back and forth throughout this novel about Truly. One minute she was making me laugh and I was behind her 100% in her actions and the next I wanted to jump into the pages and throttle her. Truly is truly pulled in every direction because she's never been taught how to feel about love and life and in turn to forgive. Her life is out of control and it finally comes to a head leaving her with only two possibilities: live or die. In the end, everything is wrapped up and tied with a bow but I'm still left thinking about the results of her actions. It was a really good book that kept me interested but again, Truly wasn't your typical hero. You read it and tell me what you think
