The Alchemist's Daughter by Katherine McMahon

My latest read is called The Alchemist's Daughter by Katherine McMahon. It's an interesting look at a young girl living in the 1700s - struggling with the tug-of-war between a yearning to experience life or pursue knowledge through science. The author includes tons of historical references (Sir Isaac Newton) and anyone interested in how effed up the medical/scientific field used to be and the crazy ideas that scientists used to have about life and fire etc. will be intrigued. I'm still in the middle of reading and expect this novel to have not such a happy ending for our heroine in the male-run world during the Age of Reason.

The Alchemists Daughter and it was good (three stars out of five). Interesting. I was truly fascinated by the history and detail. The author's ability with imagery was pretty spectacular. There is one scene where a woman is giving birth - in the 1700s - and the author did such a good job, I wanted to look away as I was reading - almost as though I was watching a horror movie and needed to avert my eyes. Anyway, a novel I would recommend.
